Kyler’s First Birthday Cake Smash | Virginia Beach Photographer

When Kyler’s mom, Taylor, reached out about doing a First Trip Around the Sun cake smash for her son, I was SO excited! I love when parents bring their ideas that let me design something fresh and fun. This was a new theme for me, and I immediately started planning the details — from finding the perfect backdrop to coordinating a matching cake and topper.


Planning cake smashes is one of my favorite parts of this job. Each setup is a little celebration of personality — and I love how this one turned out! We all agreed on the same backdrop, and once everything came together, it felt like it was meant to be.

Kyler was an absolute blast at his session. He came in full of energy and gave me every expression in his arsenal — grins, smirks, serious stares, and that wide-eyed curiosity only one-year-olds can pull off. I’m known for being an “over-clicker,” but this little guy had my finger cramping because I didn’t want to miss a single look!

At first, he wasn’t too sure about the cake, but by the end, he had fully committed — at least to the frosting! The beautiful cake was made by Lenora’s Corner Cakery in Chesapeake. Ayana did such an incredible job! This cute little cake was the perfect finishing touch for this adorable milestone session.

This was also my first cake smash at The Studio Hampton Roads in Virginia Beach, and it was such a wonderful experience. The space made setup so easy, and the lighting was perfect for capturing all those bright, joyful colors. As a studio partner, all of my studio sessions — from newborn to family — will now take place at The Studio Hampton Roads locations, which I’m so excited about!
