A Dreamy Maternity Session in Virginia Beach

Calling all lighthouse lovers! What a beautiful location the beach and lighthouse at Fort Story in Virginia give us for our maternity session. We were able to time it juuuust right so we had the full range — sunshine, sunset, and even a few photos with the moon shining down on us. The sky was painted with the most beautiful hues and gave us a full range of variety. I literally would not shut up about the colors. Just call me Pocahontas. I wanted to paint with all the colors of the wind.

Amanda, Cody and their daughter were so easy to get along with. They came open, ready to take direction, and most importantly, ready to laugh. Especially when that rogue wave came up and took out Cody’s shoes! We love a good sport, though. And the way the water foamed around their feet? Gah, you guys, it was perfection.

As the light started to fade and the waves calmed down, we shifted gears from playful family moments to just Amanda and Cody. I always like to carve out a few quiet minutes for the couple. They had such a calm and loving energy about them, it was easy to capture on camera.

At the end of our time together, the sky grew darker and the moon peeked out. I had shifted to solo portraits with Amanda at this point, and as we were ready to wrap up, I hedged my bets and asked if she was willing to try out an idea I had — one that might leave her cold and covered in sand, but I knew would be worth it. Amanda, the rockstar that she is, said, “Let’s do it!”

And I’m so glad she did. That last photo of her lying in the sand, waves behind her, — one of my favorite photos ever.
